A Glimpse Into the History and Uses of Fork Lift Trucks

Often in huge industrial plants and factories you’ll find those huge trucks to lift and move heavy materials from one place to another. These are the fork lift trucks that are also called by the names of a lift truck, sideloader, etc. Although there have always been some means of transportation to move huge things from one place to another, fork lift trucks came as a relief to movers and workers in factories as it takes a huge load off the manual work, literally. They are an important item for warehouses and distribution centres where huge containers and parcels are handled.

Fork lift trucks came to be developed during the latter side of the 19th century and the initial years of the 20th century when due to various reasons like World War I there was acute shortage for labourers. They were widely used in both the world wars for carrying and storing different war items. In 1906 the Pennsylvania Railroad brought the platform trucks that were used to carry luggage in the train station. This could be called the preliminary form of forklift trucks which was later modified to different forms and purposes.

It was in 1920 that the fork lift trucks that carry the idea of the lifting huge items that we use today were manufactured by Yale & Towne Manufacturing in the United States. Today, different companies manufacture fork lift trucks, and there are different types suitable for various purposes. If the earlier trucks couldn’t reach greater heights the ones that were developed later covered that need as well.

Fork lift trucks are available in different varieties and load capacities. A typical truck includes the truck frame, cab, overhead guard, counter weight and wheels. According to the purpose for which a truck is used more parts are added to make it compatible for the use. The most common fork lift truck is used to carry materials that weigh up to five tons. There are larger ones that are used to carry heavier items that weigh up to 50 tons as well like the shipping containers.

Purchasing fork lift trucks need some amount of research and study. It has to suit the purpose that you need it for. Today you’ll find both new and used ones in the market. You could also check them out online. The buying part of the truck is easy; the tough part is to choose the right one. It is better to look up the different materials available on this topic as well as consulting various forklift truck owners who could give you valuable tips on buying a truck that is worth your money.
