Tips on where to rock climb in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Probably the best rock climbing in Brazil is in and around Rio de Janeiro city. It is a place with a large variety of mountains, such as Urca with a steep 200m crags right by the pavements. Also, the world famous landmark of Christ the Redeemer, stands at the top of a peak called Corcovado, with its 710 meters of altitude, offering different routes for experienced and intermediate climbers. At Pão de Açucar (Sugar Loaf) peak, with its 390 meters of altitude, dozens of routes can be conquered, by climbers of all levels, from beginners and first timers to very experienced ones.
After climbing by the beaches of Rio you can also visit some of the best mountain areas in Brazil, including the impressive Pedra do Bau in the scenic Serra da Mantiqueria. There are climbing routes and “via ferrata” of up to 300m long on this peak and on the neighbouring peaks of Ana Chata and the Bauzinho. Elsewhere in the mountains of Brazil there is excellent climbing and scrambling in the Itatiaia national park, including the peak of Agulhas Negras 2787m, which has both easy scrambling and harder rock climbing routes on it’s flank.
Hiring a rock climbing tour operator is always a good way to go, since they usually offer transportation, gear and guiding services. Adventuring yourself alone in those routes may be dangerous even for experts. A lot of the routes at Sugar Loaf for example, lead to the summit, but there are also options where one can just rappel down. Climbing and walking in this wonderful coastal scenery and vibrant culture of Rio is an amazing experience.
